Still We Rise #2

The students here at Crenshaw all have struggles. Some may show there struggle on there face, while others keep them bottled inside. Miles Corwin uses description to describe in detail the struggles of the students in the Gifted Program. Olivia, a smart, determined young women, that was abused in her childood. School was Olivias only get away from this abuse by her mother. Sadi, an ex-gangbanger, who was an excellent student, but the streets took him, and changed his life. It took getting arrested to change is life back onto the right path. Toya, similar to Olivia, went thru something no child should. From getting raped at the pure age of 3, and getting abused by her Step Father. Toya and her younger sister also has to live with the heavy burden of the death of their mother. These students all excell in school, but these students also carry the world on their shoulders, due to the society they live in, and the everyday challenges they must face.

Clarification: Why does Miss Little have so much hatred towards Mama Moultrie?

Clarification: Did the councelor Mr. Braxton go through similar things, thats why he cares so much for his students who have problems?

Application: If you were in the same gifted program with the same students mentioned in the book, but did not have family struggles, or internal struggles, would you feel sorry for those students?

  1. Clarification:
Miss Little had so much hatred towards Mama Moultrie because Mama Moultrie was head of the english department and that is a position Miss Little wanted.

    Application:
I would feel sorry for those students because while i am here breezing on through school without any problems, those students are facing really huge problems that may not even allow them to go to college or worse graduate high school.

  3. Application: Yes, I would feel sympathetic because what they were going through was so rough. Being the person I am, I would open myself up for them to talk to and actually listen. i would let them know that they were not alone because whenever they just needed a friend, I would be there for them.
