How do students survive the mean streets of La? Its either gang or death, but no, these 12 students went for the books. Miles Corwin, author of “And Still We Rise”, describes the lives of 12 inner city students. Corwin goes deep into there every day lives to see how they live, and interact with the world around. These students are not oridinary students, but students who are gifted, and excel in the classroom. These students try there best to maintain there high grades, and social status, while also dogging the mean streets of South Central-La. The streets are their worst enemy, with gangs, and stray bullets distracting them. They are no longer afraid to die, but afraid to live but they strive to continue in order to have a future. Miles Corwin tells about adversities they face in home, on the streets and in school. The reached outside there minds for a better life through education and the determination they had within.

clarification :
ReplyDeleteStudents that live in rural areas are not always given comfort, so they tend to find comfort in the streets where tough love is all the love they have. But some students like the students included in And Still We Rise find that comfort in school by reading, writing , and simluations . The love they don thave at home, they can get through books and their teachers.
application: I think that the community that kids live do indeed help them in school and through life. There is this saying that says "you can take the girl out the hood but you cant take the hood out the girl" and this saying relates to this question. Throughout your life your always going to reminise from where you lived at and how life was for you when you were growing up. People tend to use what they learned in their background and their history to get past their future.
Clarification: Students who live in rural areas find a comfort zone in going to school and getting an education to get out of that area, instead of becoming involved in street activities. All students don't become involved in gang activity, as we have read and lived, and we know that in order to make things better for ourselves in the future, we must stay away from negativity and people who will bring us down.
ReplyDeleteApplication: When a community is devoted to the kids who live and attend school in that neighborhood, it helps them strive for the best because they have support and motivation. When a community is filled with just gang violence or drugs, the kids see that and fall into because of influence, or create their own motivation because it isn't coming from anywhere else. Our community is what you learn from. We learn from the mistakes and from the things that were done right, and that which is done right could help students when it comes to school.
